Creature Of The Mayans

Designed for: Concept Piece

What if the "Creature of the Black Lagoon" took place in a time long before, where the Mayans once lived? What if it went from a film to a cartoon next?

Mayan High Priestess

The female lead and the priestess of her people. I didn't want it to be another princess, chief's daughter, or normal girl that's suddenly swept off her feet by a popular male story. Though she has the male lead who is meant to protect her, she often also protects him and would save him later on. This was primarily just a concept piece but the intent is still important.

Mayan Warrior

The male lead who is assigned to protect the Priestess.

Weapon: Bola

Mayan Warrior Color Variations

The color variations are based on various paintings, ruins, and nature's colors for different species of birds.

Creature of the Mayans

A humanoid creature who resides in the water near the main leads' home. The design of the head and tail were based on an axolotl. The open chest is not fully open, it is protected by translucent and somewhat hard flesh that still allows you to see inside. In the darkness, his marking and the translucent area illuminate with bioluminescent light.

Creature Head Sketches

Instead of silhouettes or sketching full bodies to start the design, I began with head designs. Based on the shape, height, and width, it would give me a good idea of what I'd want to do for the rest of the build since it needed to still be a humanoid. I picked the top two and made a decision from there.

War Boat

Prop design of the warship the Priestess and Warrior frequent on with other worriers as well as the chief.

What If It Was Designed For A Cartoon?

Priestess Cartoon

Style Reference: Panty and stocking

Key characteristics: Sharp edges at the end of cured and straight lines.

Priestess Color Variations

The headpiece's colors were based on the materials and paints that the Mayans primarily made and used. The blue, in particular, was based on Chaak the rain god and was used by Priests during rituals.  I chose to darken it instead of using the very bright blue color that you can see in murals, sculptures, etc.

Warrior Cartoon

Warrior also in the style of Panty and Stocking,

Originally I was going to reference Brief, but because his proportions are similar to the female leads' I decided to take from the many other male background characters to form his build.
